A TOKEN OF THE COVENANT 2

Genesis 17:19 ( And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him)

Before the covenant promises given to Abraham can be reflected in a believer’s life, there must first be separation.

“Get out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee”.

A Christian needs to separate himself from whatever distracts him from his calling. He must separate himself from the world and its allurements, from Satan and his works, from the works of darkness, and from anything opposed to God.

“What communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?”

Whoever loves his father, mother, or relatives more than Christ is not worthy of Him.

The words of the covenant unfold one after another: “I will make of thee a great nation”. Through Christ, believers are described as “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation”, set apart for God’s purposes. God also said of His covenant people, “he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye”.

“I will bless thee, and make thy name great”.

Those who are under God’s covenant are called to true greatness, but biblical greatness is not measured by money or possessions. John the Baptist was called “great in the sight of the Lord”, yet he lived simply in the wilderness, wearing clothing made of camel’s hair and eating locusts and wild honey.

This means that physical prosperity does not determine how great you are. Your relationship with God and your faithfulness to His calling are more important measures of true greatness.

“Thou shalt be a blessing”.

It is one thing to be blessed by God, and it is another thing to become a blessing to others.

Abraham moved beyond receiving God’s blessing to becoming a channel of blessing. God said, “In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”.

This was not an ordinary relationship that Abraham had with God. He was called to receive God’s blessing and to become a blessing to others.

Have you also moved from being blessed to becoming a blessing to others? Through you, is praise being offered to God for what He has done in the lives of others?

Through Abraham’s seed, Jesus Christ, blessing has come to Israel and to the nations. Scripture identifies Christ as the promised Seed through whom Abraham’s blessing comes to the Gentiles.

If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham’s seed and an heir according to the promise. Therefore, you are called to be a blessing to others through the gospel. Many want to know God, but someone needs to tell them, testify about Christ, and call them to faith and repentance.

You must be a blessing by sharing with others what God has entrusted to you. Scripture commends generosity and warns against storing up earthly treasure for oneself while neglecting God’s purposes.

Spiritual gifts must be used to serve others, glorify Christ, and build up His church.

God also promised to protect Abraham and his descendants: “I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee”. This promise must be understood within God’s covenant purposes and does not authorize personal vengeance or retaliation.

After Abraham demonstrated his faith by being willing to offer Isaac, God reaffirmed the promise that his offspring would possess the gate of their enemies. This points to God’s victory and the triumph of Abraham’s promised Seed, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

As a servant and ambassador of Christ, you are called to proclaim God’s truth and stand firm in faith. Scripture teaches that believers may pray with confidence, but it does not give us authority to control every circumstance or to decree whatever we desire. God alone is sovereign. We are called to pray according to His will to resist evil, and to live faithfully even amid opposition. Christ reigns in the midst of His enemies, and believers share in His victory through faithful perseverance.

Abraham became a blessing to the nations through his promised Seed, Jesus Christ. Those who belong to Christ are called to bear fruit consistent with repentance. Our choices and conduct can either serve as a blessing to others or become a source of harm; therefore, we must walk in obedience to God.

Instead of addition, some have become a source of loss. Instead of carrying and transmitting life to others through their witness, some have become transmitters of harm and darkness through their conduct.

What you transmit to others reveals the character of your faith and the fruit it produces.

You are called to walk as light in the Lord, because “the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not”. If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham’s seed and an heir according to the promise, called to live as a holy people and to proclaim God’s excellencies.

Prayer: Father lord, make your promises to Abraham come to fulfillment in my life, as I’m one of his children by faith in the lord Jesus Christ, in Jesus name, amen.
