Exodus 33:2–3

«“And I will send an angel before thee; and will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiff-necked people: lest I consume thee in the way.”»

Exodus 33:15 ( And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence)

God was angry with the children of Israel because they had made a golden calf and bowed down to worship it.

As a result, He told Moses that instead of personally going with them to the Promised Land, He would send an angel before them to lead them and drive out their enemies, lest His presence among them consume them because of their rebellion.

But Moses was not satisfied with the promise of an angel. He would rather continue the journey in God’s presence than proceed without Him. Moses understood that divine presence was greater than divine assistance.

When the children of Israel heard these grievous tidings, they mourned and removed their ornaments, which had become symbols associated with their rebellion.

They understood the difference between having the presence of God in their midst and merely having an angel sent ahead of them.

Unfortunately, many Christians today appear to prefer angelic manifestations to the presence of God. Some seek encounters with angels while neglecting the character, holiness, and obedience required to walk with God.

We have elevated angels in some assemblies beyond their divine purpose. We speak of commanding them as though they were errand boys, while neglecting submission to the Word of God and obedience to divine authority.

The manifestation of God’s presence is different and far more glorious than the ministry of angels. Angels are servants sent to carry out divine assignments, but they are not substitutes for God.

When we genuinely praise God, we give Him the honour that belongs to Him alone. God inhabits the praises of His people. Angels may be sent on divine assignments, but no angel can replace the presence of the living God.

No power can hinder the presence of God. He manifests Himself, and creation responds to His authority. Angels, however, carry out specific assignments and, according to Scripture, may encounter opposition in the execution of those assignments.

This is why the church must be careful not to become obsessed with angelic manifestations while neglecting the presence of God. An unhealthy pursuit of supernatural experiences can open the door to deception, especially when people fail to test the spirits and discern what is truly of God.

We have even coined names for angels and attributed them to God without biblical knowledge or discernment. Yet angels are servants of God and operate under His authority. No wonder the Bible says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

If you are seeking angelic encounters more than the living God, you must examine the source of that desire. Angels of God do not operate independently of God’s will, nor do they draw men away from the worship of God.

Whenever angels of God appeared to men in Scripture, they refused worship. Any spirit that receives the worship that belongs to God is not representing God.

Likewise, any spirit that glorifies sin while continuing to display supernatural power must be tested carefully. Miracles alone are not sufficient proof that a manifestation is from God. Satan himself can transform himself into an angel of light.

The people of darkness understand the reality of spiritual power. That is why supernatural manifestations alone should never be used as the measure of truth. The question is not merely, “Was there power?” The greater question is, “Whom does that power glorify, and does it lead men into obedience to God?”

God told the Israelites that He would send an angel before them. They were warned not to provoke him, for he would not pardon their transgressions. This reveals an important distinction between God’s direct presence among His people and the ministry of an angel sent on assignment.

When God was in their midst, Moses could intercede before Him for the people. God showed mercy and granted pardon according to His will. But if His presence departed, who would stand as their intercessor before Him?

When the Israelites committed a grievous offence, God was ready to destroy them and raise another generation through Moses. Yet through intercession, they received mercy. Nevertheless, their rebellion carried consequences, and the journey that could have taken a short time became forty years in the wilderness.

Why then are we so obsessed with angelic manifestations while neglecting the presence of the living God?

Many are now seeking shortcuts to supernatural experiences while neglecting the throne of mercy. We desire the assistance of angels but forget the God of mercy.

Can angels replace the mercy of God in our lives?

God made man in His image and extended His mercy to humanity. He remembers us in our low estate and chooses to show mercy, not because of our works of righteousness, but because mercy belongs to Him.

If you take mercy out of God’s hand and hand it over to an angel, what will become of your life?

Many Christians seek the attention of so-called guiding angels but are not seeking the face of God.

Do they think a guiding angel will manifest when they have already lost the presence of God? Or do they think such an angel will still be at work after being chased away by iniquity?

They turn their backs on God in times of comfort, but when affliction arises, they begin to seek His face for mercy.

When you truly seek God’s face, you must also be willing to confront the condition of your character. If God is displeased with your conduct, the answer is not to look for an alternative spiritual power. The answer is repentance and submission.

We know that God may be displeased with our character, yet some would rather seek angelic manifestations as a substitute for genuine fellowship with Him. But will an angel become our intercessor when divine judgment is about to be executed?

Instead of submitting under the mighty hand of God and humbling ourselves until He shows us mercy, we are attempting to hide our weakness behind spiritual manifestations.

Do not be surprised when worship that was meant for God is gradually redirected towards another spirit. Satan is the great deceiver. He works against divine purpose while presenting himself as an angel of light.

Any religion that centres on angelic manifestation more than God’s manifestation is not from God. It is one of the false religions manufactured by Satan to put humanity in spiritual bondage.

Seek the presence of God above every angelic manifestation.

Angels are servants of God, but God alone is worthy of worship.

Do not pursue the servants and neglect the Master.
