Galatians 4:1–2 “Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.”
Who are the tutors and governors referred to in this passage?
Until you understand their role, you may struggle to understand why you have not yet gained access to what God has prepared for you, despite your prayers, fasting, and waiting in His presence without seeing the expected results.
Everyone who comes into the world has a heritage, both as a child of Adam and, by faith, as a child of Abraham.
If you remain a son of Adam without being transferred into the seed of Abraham by faith, your heritage remains under the dominion of the devil. However, when you are transferred into the kingdom of God, you become an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ, with access to the riches of His Father according to His purpose.
Those who enter the kingdom of God must still grow in spiritual understanding before they can be entrusted with the responsibilities and privileges prepared for them.
At this stage, they are no different from servants in the kingdom whose affairs are managed by tutors and governors until the time appointed by the Father.
They may be heirs by position, yet their experience may not reflect their standing. They are like the children of butchers who still feed on bones or people who live beside the water yet remain thirsty.
There is an appointed time for everyone who enters the kingdom of God. Although a child may belong to a wealthy household, it would be unwise to hand him the keys of a vehicle when he cannot even distinguish his left from his right.
It would equally be unwise to entrust ammunition to a small child to keep or carry into battle. Such a child would not know when or how to use it and could end up harming himself.
Scripture declares that eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, what God has prepared for those who love Him. If the full extent of God’s preparation for His children is beyond human comprehension, how can anyone deceive you by claiming that God has revealed everything you will become or precisely where He is taking you?
No prophet who operates through divination has the authority to reveal heaven’s purpose for your life. This is a serious warning to Christians who depend on prophetic declarations from others rather than growing in the knowledge of God and discerning His will through His Word.
When you grow in spiritual understanding and become what God intends you to be, He can entrust you with the responsibilities and privileges He has prepared for you in His kingdom.
You share an inheritance with Christ and have been given authority in Him. You can do the works He did and even greater works, provided you diligently serve Him in spirit and in truth.
Unfortunately, many remain under the control of tutors and governors who manage their affairs. Some may die without enjoying what God has prepared for them because they never attain the spiritual level required for their calling. They live and die as servants, failing to enjoy what God created for their benefit because they refuse to grow as He intends.
These governors are the powers that dictate the course of events in families and communities. The way forward is to grow in the knowledge of God and His Word.
Jesus Christ has been exalted far above all principalities and powers. He wants us to grow until we attain His stature, not the stature of men.
When you make a man your standard, you risk hindering your spiritual progress and limiting your understanding of God’s purpose for your life. Such dependence contradicts God’s design and can prevent you from fulfilling His will.
No man is perfect. All have fallen short of God’s glory, and those who remain stagnant in their spiritual growth may become vulnerable to Satan’s influence. It is through total surrender to the authority of Christ that a person is empowered to stand against the forces of darkness.
If the man you choose to follow refuses to grow spiritually, you may find yourself following the same path. Your spiritual progress may stagnate because you have placed it in the hands of another person, making it difficult for you to claim what God has prepared for you.
Even those you choose to follow may eventually become the tutors and governors controlling your affairs. Until you recognise this danger and amend your ways by refusing to follow men blindly, you may never gain access to what God has prepared for you before you die.
Your heritage is connected to your destiny. If you fail to discover what God created you to become, you may never fulfil His purpose for your life.
Governors also represent powers that exercise authority over territories and communities. Consider the prince of Persia, who resisted the angel sent to Daniel until Michael came to intervene.
These are powers that monitor the affairs of territories under their influence, seeking to keep humanity in bondage. Their objective is to sustain spiritual darkness until people gain understanding and seek divine intervention by calling upon the name of Jesus Christ.
It is those who call upon this name who shall be saved.
Many years ago, I had a revelation in which I was searching for things that belonged to me. I did not know that a woman in our community had kept them in a store where she stored everything belonging to the people who lived in that area.
She functioned as a governor, monitoring the financial circumstances of everyone in the community.
In the revelation, I went there secretly and retrieved whatever belonged to me before she realised I was there. I now understand this revelation as an explanation of why I was the only person living in affluence in that community while everyone else lived in abject poverty.
God is not wicked. Human beings are often ignorant of His purpose and plan for their lives. The flesh is an instrument Satan uses to accomplish his purposes in people’s lives. Until the flesh is disarmed and crucified, the devil will continue to exercise dominion over those who remain under its influence, because the flesh is associated with humanity’s fallen nature…to be continued
Prayer: Father lord, let me grow to reach the level of your stature and give the spirit of sonship in Jesus name. Amen.
